Early Detection of Glaucoma Thanks to Temple Service

While Serving at the Temple, I Saw Countless Bugs Flying, Suspecting Floaters

Last year (2022), I noticed something unusual while helping with the wedding of Seifu-ji Temple’s Buddhist priest, Reverend Seichu Ouchi. While preparing in the Women’s Association room, I saw countless bugs flying around and kept swatting them away. Despite this, the number of bugs increased, which I found odd. I asked those around me, “Are there bugs flying around in the room right now?” They replied, “There are no bugs. Perhaps you have ‘floaters‘? You should see an eye doctor.” Following their advice, I went to the eye doctor the next day.

An Eye Examination Led to the Early Detection of Glaucoma

The result was indeed floaters. However, during the eye examination, the doctor said, “Floaters are due to aging, so there’s no need to worry. But there’s something concerning with your optic nerve, so we need further tests.” I was taken to a dark room for additional tests.

I was told, “Press the buzzer you are holding when you see a small light,” and underwent a visual field test for about 15 minutes per eye. This test measures the range of vision and any missing parts.

The test result was normal-tension glaucoma. Even if the eye pressure is normal, the damage to the optic nerve sometimes might cause a narrowing of the visual field and the risk of eventual blindness. In my case, the left half of my vision was completely dark. I hadn’t noticed because it hadn’t affected my daily life.

Many people with glaucoma only seek medical help after the disease has progressed. Fortunately, thanks to the early detection, I could start treatment immediately. The doctor reassured me, “You have almost no risk of going blind,” which was a great relief.

Realized that Early Detection Would Have Happened Since I Participated in the Wedding Service at Seifuji.

If I hadn’t seen those bugs in the Women’s Association room that day and had no one suggested seeing a doctor, I wouldn’t have detected the glaucoma early. Thankfully, I only saw a lot of bugs on that particular day.

I am deeply grateful for the blessings received from the Gohonzon. Currently, I serve at the headquarters of the Women’s Association, surrounded by many unique and enjoyable individuals, making my time there truly enjoyable.

Feeling the joy of seeing clearly with both eyes, I am determined to continue my efforts to repay these blessings through dedicated service.
